The 70s to 90s were the golden era of Cantonese Pop music, especially in East Asia. Thanks to its unique geopolitical position, Hong Kong became a melting pot of international influences, blending tunes from Japanese, American, British, Spanish, German, Korean, and more. The magic happened when these global hits were given a Cantonese twist with new lyrics.
In Cantonese music, the lyrics are the star of the show. With six distinct intonations in the language, getting the right tone is crucial—one wrong note and the meaning can change entirely! This makes Cantonese Pop both a challenge and a delight to perform.
