The film chronicles the daily lives of two well-respected “Band One” secondary schools,
one for boys and one for girls. It explores several major issues: teaching objectives and styles, student’s common values, gender roles, the relationship between parents and children.

About the director

Tammy Cheung is a documentary filmmaker who was born in China, grew up in Hong Kong and is based in the UK since 2022. After years of working as a film festival organizer in Canada, Cheung made her directorial debut in 1999 in Hong Kong. Employing the ‘Direct Cinema’ approach, her works mainly explore social and political issues.

Her films include Invisible Women, Secondary School, Rice Distribution, Moving, July, Speaking Up, Village Middle School and Election.

Red Kalyna is Cheung’s first production after moving to the UK. It depicts the plight of Ukrainian refugees after the Russian Invasion. Lviv Dairy is her second documentary on the war in Ukraine that describe the difficult lives of ordinary people in Lviv, an ancient city in the western part of Ukraine.

About the facilitator
Bruce Lai is a film critic and researcher from Hong Kong. He obtained his PhD in Film Studies from King’s College London. He is a member of the Hong Kong Film Critics Society.
